The Mop Shop News of 2024

  • As August comes to a close, I want to thank the many friends of The Mop Shop who shared kind words and beautiful plants and flowers acknowledging our tenth anniversary.  Thanks also to the local media...the Territory Times, the Galena Gazette and The Flash...for sharing our story with readers.  And special thanks to Pastor Robin and the congregation at Lord of Love Lutheran Church for the lovely celebratory luncheon shared with Mop Shop volunteers on August 11.  A four-foot banner that read "The Mop Shop:  Ten Years in the Making" adorned the wall outside the Shop.  On display were collage posters from the past ten years.  Clients were gifted with Libman mops and cupcakes and iced tea were available as clients and volunteers celebrated a decade of dedicated service.  It was a fun-filled, festive month for all! Here's to the next ten years!  (August 2024)

  • The Mop Shop will be open on Saturday, August 10 and Monday, August 26 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  Please stop by and join in the festivities planned for our tenth anniversary celebration!  We look forward to seeing you!   • Happy tenth anniversary!  It was ten years ago this month that The Mop Shop welcomed its first clients!  Thirty-four clients and family members crossed the threshold that first morning.  Fast forward ten years and records show that 1, 629 clients and family members from ten communities within the county have registered.  As a non 501(c)(3), The Mop Shop has always relied on the generosity of family, friends, banks, businesses, churches, civic organizations, social clubs and youth groups to provide the funding needed to keep the shelves fully stocked.  The support received has been overwhelming and we have been energized by the opportunities we've had to collaborate with other service providers.  Heartfelt thanks to the many friends and followers of The Mop Shop.  You make our community the special place we all call home.  Here's to the next ten years!   • We celebrated our first anniversary at Lord of Love in early July and on August 4, The Mop Shop will celebrate its tenth anniversary! To date, 1,597 clients and family members from 10 communities within Jo Daviess County have registered.  Some visit just a few times, more visit periodically, others come regularly, and a handful have been with us nearly every month since we opened. Generous product and monetary donations and opportunities to collaborate have been incredible.  We are overcome with gratitude for the interest, dedication and support the community has extended.  On behalf of our twelve volunteers and all our clients, I extend a sincere thank you! Here's to the next ten years! (July 2024)

  • This month The Mop Shop will celebrate its first anniversary at Lord of Love Lutheran Church! And what a fabulous year it's been! Members of the congregation welcomed us enthusiastically before we even opened the door on July 8!  And their thoughtful support, kindness and generosity have continued throughout the year.  On behalf of our clients and volunteers, my heartfelt thanks to Pastor Robin, the Church Council and all members of the congregation.  The past twelve months have exceeded all expectations! I can't wait to see what the future holds! (July 2024)

  • The Mop Shop is pleased to be included in the newly released third edition of  The HOPE Foundation Community Services Directory.  The Directory includes over 200 listings in 36 categories of services available to residents in Jo Daviess County.  In addition to cleaning and laundry supplies, categories include housing and food services, disability services, legal resources, senior citizen programs, veterans' services, eyesight and hearing assistance, health insurance and prescription drug assistance, home health care, social security benefits and much more.  The Directory can be viewed online and printed by visiting www.hopefoundationjdc.org.   • Please make plans to visit The Mop Shop if you live in Jo Daviess County and are in need of cleaning supplies. We will be open the second Saturday of the month, July 13 and the fourth Monday, July 22 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. We hope to see you then!  New clients are always welcome! (July 2024)

  • Brought to you by Midwest Medical Center!  On Monday, June 24, nurses from Midwest Medical Center will be at The Mop Shop from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon offering wellness checks.  Clients who wish to have their blood pressure, pulse, weight and glucose checked may do so at no charge.  Many thanks to Midwest and the nursing staff for providing this service! Start the summer off on a path to good health! (June 2024)

  • The Mop Shop will be open Saturday, June 8 and again on Monday, June 24, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  You're welcome to visit either day every month.  Thanks to our friends at Earth Breeze, we now have EcoSheets available in fresh scent and fragrance free.  EcoSheets are hypoallergenic, septic-friendly, effective in both hot and cold water and easy to use.  We want to do our part to eliminate those plastic jugs! We hope to see you soon! (June 2024)

  • REMINDER. The Mop Shop will be closed on Monday, May 27, in recognition of Memorial Day.  If you are unable to visit The Mop Shop on Saturday, May 11, please stop by on Saturday, June 8.  We will be open from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  (May 2024)

  • The Mop Shop and the United Churches of Galena Food Pantry hosted a Meet and Greet for Jo Daviess County Food Pantry Directors and associates on Friday, May 3.  Each had an opportunity to share their stories and update their contact information.  Pastor Robin Luckey of Lord of Love Lutheran Church provided a warm welcome and three representatives from Jo Daviess County Transit were on hand to describe their program, respond to questions and share plans for the future.  In addition, Stephanie Beck from Jo Daviess Local Foods provided information regarding distribution of food made available by local farmers.  Tours of The Mop Shop and the United Churches of Galena Food Pantry were available following the formal program.  It was a positive, productive and fun morning! (May 2024)

  • The Mop Shop will join nearly 40 other vendors at the Senior Expo at Galena's Crossroads Community Church on Thursday, April 25.  Please stop by between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon to learn about programs and services available to seniors in and around Jo Daviess County.  This is an opportunity to ask about healthcare, voting, moving, real estate, home care, insurance and more! Hearing tests, retinal screenings and eyeglass collection will be available through the Lions Club and the Freeport Health Network will be there to check your blood pressure.  Angela Kaiser, Jo Daviess County Clerk and Recorder, will respond to voting questions at 10:00.  Bring your friends and neighbors for a fun, informative morning!   • Please come see us! The Mop Shop will be open Saturday, April 13 and again on Monday, April 22 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  Clients may visit once a month, either day.  We are averaging 25.7 new clients and family members a month! New clients are always welcome!  In addition, Lord of Love Lutheran Church, home of The Mop Shop, hosts a Welcome Table the first and third Wednesday of the month.  Plated lunches, beverages and dessert are provided at no charge on April 3 and again on April 17 from 11 am to 1:00 pm.  All are welcome!  Come for the food and stay for the conversation!  (April 2024)

  • Many thanks to Nicole Hermsen and Lindsey D'Antonio at Jo Daviess County Transit! Thanks to their efforts, a brochure designed to provide riders to The Mop Shop with important information is now available.  The colorful, easy to read brochures can be found at The Mop Shop and in JDCT vehicles.  Thanks to Nicole and Lindsey as well as all the drivers for their support!   • March is off to a brisk start!  Please join the Welcome Table at Lord of Love Lutheran Church on Wednesday, March 6.  Members of the community are invited to gather for lunch between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, the first and third Wednesday of the month.  Come meet your friends and neighbors for fun, fellowship and food!  Then, on Saturday, March 9, The Mop Shop will be open from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  We will be open again on Monday, March 25.  Clients may visit either day, once a month.  We look forward to seeing you!  (March 2024)

  • Please stop by Lord of Love Lutheran Church between 11:00 and 1:00 on Wednesday, February 21.  Members of the community are invited to enjoy food, fun and fellowship at the Welcome Table. Information about The Mop Shop will be available. The Welcome Table is held the first and third Wednesday of the month.  All are welcome! (February 2024) 

  • The Mop Shop is thrilled to be associated with Lord of Love Lutheran Church.  The congregation is dedicated to serving the community and extends a warm welcome to gather for lunch at the Welcome Table.  Held the first and third Wednesday of the month, please stop by the church at 219 Summit Street anytime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.  Come for food and stay for fun and fellowship! All are welcome to attend!  The first luncheon will be served on February 7.  (February 2024)

  • The Mop Shop is pleased to be serving the residents of Anderson Apartments in Stockton.  Affiliated with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, the building includes 8 apartments for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities.  Residents live independently in their own apartments with support services provided by LSSI. Many thanks to Kreider Services for assisting The Mop Shop expand its outreach efforts. (February 2024)

  • BREAKING NEWS:  DUE TO THE RECENT HEAVY SNOWFALL, DANGEROUS WINDCHILL AND HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS, THE MOP SHOP WILL BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY,  JANUARY 13.  The health and safety of our clients and volunteers are always our top priority.  Please come see us on Monday, January 22.  We are now open the fourth Monday of every month from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. We will also be open on Saturday, February 10.  Please stay safe and warm. (January 11, 2024)

  • Exciting News! In cooperation with Lord of Love Lutheran Church, The Mop Shop will now be open twice a month! We will continue serving clients the second Saturday of each month.  We will also be open the fourth Monday of the month.  Hours will be 10:00 am to 12:00 noon both days.  Clients may visit once a month.  We hope to see you soon!  New clients are always welcome!   • Thanks to our friends at Stonedrift Spa at Eagle Ridge Golf Resort and Spa for the blankets donated to The Mop Shop. The plush blankets, cleaned and sanitized, will be well received by our clients as windchills in the days ahead are forecast to be as low as -45! The Mop Shop appreciates the well-timed and generous gifts.  Many thanks for your continued support! (January 2024)
